charlie spring  / reviews and comments
"Charlie Spring is an inimitable tunesmith, a veteran songwriter with a gift for penning achingly beautiful love songs.  At once reminiscent of Neil Young and Pete Seegar, Charlie's sincerity, wisdom and artistry (which shine through in his songs) are an inspiration."
HarryO, Promoter, Big Step Down Productions, Seattle, WA
"Charlie Spring's debut CD recording, A Grateful Man, welcomes you like an old friend.  Reminiscent of the laid-back country folk of the seventies, it sounds like a guy playing music on his back porch.  The casual style is enhanced by skillful guitar work and a soulful singing voice, like Neil Young but without the whine.  The only thing we have to prove is what we prove to ourselves," says Charlie.  Whether he is proving it to us or to himself, Charlie did a nice job on this album."
Betsy Welling, Victory Music Review,  August 2003
"Listening to Chrlie Spring's new CD, A Grateful Man fills your head with images of the  daydreaming guitar player hitchin' a ride in the back of a pickup through the wheat fields of middle America just strummin' and singin' away with a loose grin and all the time in the world.  Charlie sings like a new lover or a new father, slightly in awe of the world.  His voice is a delicate, smoky whisper that dances like a long-time partner over his immaculately sparse guitar lines.  Like poems of innocence, beauty, love, loss and leaving, Charlie's songs are perfect gems.  Nothing extraneous.  Nothing wanting".
Deborah Bartley, Singer-Songwriter / Recording  Artist

"Thanks again for sharing the gig with me yesterday.  I had a blast and all of my friends and family loved your music and voice.  Let's do it again soon..."
Hans York, Singer-Songwriter, Producer, Recording Artist
"I'm pleased to have had the pleasure to work with Charlie Spring.  His performance at the Bellevue Art Museum Fair 2003 Celebration Arts Stage received a very responsive and warm reaction from our fair-goers.  His precise and fluid musicianship kept the crowd engaged throughout his set.  His universal appeal and professional demeanor on stage far exceeded my expectations.  If you are looking for a musician for your event, Charlie Spring is an excellent choice.  He was a delight to work with during the hiring process, and we look forward to having him play future events for the Bellevue Art Museum."
Caitlin Mullock, Bellevue Art Museum Fair Entertainment Intern, Bellevue, WA

"Charlie's music wraps itself around you like a soft quilt.  His voice, reminiscent of Neil Young, is a comfort in itself.  When you add warm songs about love and heartache, you have an album that's perfect for a rainy day... with a cup of tea... and a picture window looking out at the world."
Kellee Bradley, Singer-Songwriter / Recording Artist

"I was goose-bump struck upon first listen to this CD.  The songs are at once intimate and touchingly familiar.  How could you not connect with the passion behind the words?  particularly Stand Still, but all of the disc makes me feel right at home".
Jean Mann, Singer-Songwriter / Recording Artist

"I listen to Charlie Spring's CD ALL THE TIME!!!  I love it.  It is wonderful.  I also play it in my store regularly".
Jennifer Hardison,  Port Orchard, WA

"I heard your music at the Redmond Market in October.  My one year old daughter loved your music.  Can you please send me two copies of of your CD, These Songs Are Your Songs?
Mari Sullivan, Redmond, WA
"My girlfriend I and listened to your CD and we really liked it!  You do have the "Neil Young" in you.  That is awesome.  It's hard to say which one I like the most... how about the first one then the next one and the next...  "A Grateful Man' drew tears of life.  How real can you get.  I also downloaded "Wabash Cannonball' from your website which made me think a bit like Gordon Lightfoot but your music is better.  I guess it's the melody.  Keep playing, I can hear you down here :-)"
Terri Modin, Federal Way, Washington

"
Thank YOU.  Good music is always appreciated.  And your music is very good.  I think you have some very good songs.  My favorite from the album is Stand Still, although A Grateful Man also gets quite a bit of humming.  And I know that if I'm humming it, the song has staying power with me.
The flow from song to song is also appreciated.  It's nice to hear an album that can flow like a river, gently, over my ears.  It sure takes a great effort to put the songs together in a pleasing way, leaving a positive impression both individually and as a collection.  Your effort was successful.
Perhaps best of all, is that the album represents accurately what we heard the night we saw you.  That's important to me because so often I hear an artist in the studio and they cannot reproduce their efforts live.  You can and do.  It has, I suppose, something to do with the simplicity with which you present yourself.
In this age os studio magic, where producers mold plastic people with little talent into insipid sound-alikes of last week's washed up wanna-be, it's a great pleasure to hear down to earth music, played well and with genuine feeling."
William Tucker, Minneapolis, Minnesota

"I am listening to Charlie's CD for the second time now and really enjoying it.  It's like having a personal performance here in my living room.  I really enjoy the intimate quality of the CD.  It really allows for the beauty of his voice and lyrics to settle in.  Really wonderful"

Carrie Clark, Singer-Songwriter / Recording Artist

"Well, I should say I know Charlie.  I've shared a stage or two with him in the past as a fellow singer-songwriter and I bought a CD off him the other week ( as many of you will likely do as well).  I was pleasantly surprised at the engagement I got as a listener to this simply produced, solidly composed collection of songs.
Charlie's got great rhythm so there's no need for a drummer to help the listener interpret that.  The guitar sounds good from low to high frequencies so no need for fancy back-up musicians.  All the better to listen to the lyrics and Charlie's gentle voice lending to the reflective moods and love in the songs..  Really cool, and hard to do without coming off as a pretentious Nick Drake wanna-be.
Charlie Spring has a deep message and it is allowed to come through on this album.  It's a CD you'll WANT to listen to and Doesn't scream 'Listen to me! Listen to me! Listen to me!' like a lot of the overproduced dribble sounds like.  It saves SPACE for the listener to experience what he's talking about in the songs which is a rare quality in music these days.
When you hear this CD you'll know what to expect from him live ( as most, if not all of these were recorded live, the old-fashioned way... no punch-ins and the like).
But don't take my word for it, just go and see him play, buy the disc, relax and listen (not necessarily in that order).
